How PIP and Universal Credit interact
Video coming soon
PIP and Universal Credit are both administered by DWP, but they are separate benefits with separate rules. A common worry is that claiming one will reduce the other \u2014 in practice, a PIP award is far more likely to unlock extra help within Universal Credit than to reduce it.
PIP is not counted as income for Universal Credit, and does not reduce your standard allowance.
How a PIP award can help your Universal Credit
PIP is paid on top of Universal Credit
PIP is a separate, non-means-tested benefit. Receiving it does not reduce your Universal Credit standard allowance, and your Universal Credit does not reduce your PIP — they are assessed completely independently.
It can trigger the UC health element
If you're found to have limited capability for work and work-related activity (LCWRA) through the separate Work Capability Assessment, your Universal Credit can include an extra monthly LCWRA element. Getting PIP daily living isn't the same test, but PIP evidence can support that separate WCA process.
Work allowance and conditionality
Getting PIP (or reporting a health condition) can affect your Universal Credit work-related requirements and, in some circumstances, your work allowance — the amount you can earn before your Universal Credit starts reducing.
Disabled child addition
If your child receives DLA or PIP, your Universal Credit award can include an extra amount for a disabled child, at a higher rate if they get the highest DLA care rate or enhanced PIP daily living.
Carer element
If someone in your household cares for you and receives Carer's Allowance (which itself requires you to be getting a qualifying benefit like PIP daily living), your Universal Credit claim can include a carer element for them.
Passporting to other help
A PIP award, combined with being on Universal Credit, can also help with passporting to things like a Council Tax Reduction or certain NHS costs, depending on your local council and circumstances.
To understand what your PIP award could actually be worth before you look at how it interacts with Universal Credit, see current PIP rates. A PIP award can also help a family member qualify for Carer's Allowance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does getting PIP reduce my Universal Credit?
No. PIP is not counted as income for Universal Credit purposes, so receiving it does not reduce your Universal Credit standard allowance or any other element.
Do I automatically get the Universal Credit health element if I get PIP?
No. The Universal Credit health (LCWRA) element depends on a separate Work Capability Assessment, not directly on your PIP award, although the same underlying health evidence is often relevant to both.
Can I claim Universal Credit and PIP at the same time?
Yes. They are different benefits with different rules — many people receive both together, and doing so is very common.
Does my Universal Credit affect whether I qualify for PIP?
No. PIP eligibility is based entirely on how your condition affects your daily living and mobility, using the points system — it takes no account of your income, savings, or other benefits.
