How PIP can unlock Carer's Allowance for a family member

Being awarded PIP does not just affect you \u2014 it can also be the qualifying benefit that lets a family member, partner, or friend claim Carer's Allowance for the care they already give you, worth a separate weekly payment in their own right.
PIP daily living (standard or enhanced) is a qualifying benefit for Carer's Allowance \u2014 the mobility component on its own is not.
What has to be true for your carer to qualify
You must be getting a qualifying disability benefit
PIP daily living (standard or enhanced rate) is one of the qualifying benefits for Carer's Allowance — alongside Attendance Allowance and DLA at the middle or highest care rate. The PIP mobility component alone does not qualify; it must be the daily living component.
Your carer must spend 35+ hours a week caring for you
There's no partial or reduced rate below 35 hours — it's a hard weekly minimum, not an average across several weeks. This can include practical help, supervision, and emotional support, not just hands-on physical care.
The carer's own earnings must be below the limit
Carer's Allowance has an earnings limit of £204/week (2026/27) after allowable deductions such as pension contributions and some care costs. Earning even £1 over the limit in a week loses that whole week's payment.
Only one person can claim per care recipient
Even if several family members or friends share the caring responsibilities, only one of them can receive Carer's Allowance for looking after you at any one time.

Carer element in Universal Credit
If your carer also claims Universal Credit, receiving Carer's Allowance for looking after you means their claim can include an extra carer element.
Class 1 National Insurance credits
Carer's Allowance automatically credits National Insurance contributions, which can protect your carer's State Pension record even while they are not working.
Effect on your own benefits
Your carer receiving Carer's Allowance can, in some cases, reduce a Severe Disability Premium you rely on within older legacy benefits — it's worth checking your whole household picture before your carer applies.
PIP can also interact with your own Universal Credit claim. See current PIP rates to understand what daily living award your carer would need you to have.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my carer need to live with me to get Carer's Allowance?
No. A family member or friend can claim Carer's Allowance whether or not they live with you, and whether or not they are related to you — the requirement is about the care given, not the living arrangement.
Can my carer claim Carer's Allowance before my PIP claim is decided?
No. You must already be receiving a qualifying benefit — such as PIP daily living — before your carer's Carer's Allowance claim can be approved. Carer's Allowance cannot come first.
Will my carer getting Carer's Allowance reduce my PIP?
No. Carer's Allowance and PIP are assessed completely independently — your carer claiming it does not reduce your PIP award in any way.
What if I only qualify for the PIP mobility component, not daily living?
The PIP mobility component alone does not count as a qualifying benefit for Carer's Allowance — your carer would need you to be receiving the daily living component specifically.
