Launching Disability Allowance Support in Ireland

Silverwings Benefits is expanding beyond the UK, and Ireland is where we're starting. Our first Irish service is a dedicated support offering for Disability Allowance (DA) — a weekly payment from the Department of Social Protection (DSP) for people aged 16 to 66 whose injury, illness or disability substantially restricts their capacity to work.

What Disability Allowance is, briefly

DA is a means-tested payment, currently worth up to €232 a week, for people whose condition is expected to last at least a year and who meet the DSP's income and savings limits. It isn't only for people who can't work at all — DA can continue alongside Rehabilitative Employment, with up to €165 a week disregarded from the means test. Getting DA can also open the door to other supports, including the Free Travel Pass, Fuel Allowance, and Medical Card advantages.

Who it's for

If you're between 16 and 66, have a diagnosed condition or are in the process of getting one confirmed, and your ability to work is genuinely affected, DA is very likely worth checking — whether you're currently out of work, in reduced hours, or in rehabilitative employment. The means test and the medical evidence requirements are where most people get stuck, which is exactly the part we're building support around.

What we're building

  • An Irish-specific eligibility check covering the age rules, the work-capacity test, and the income and savings limits.
  • Guidance on gathering the medical evidence the DSP actually looks for — GP letters, consultant reports, and how to describe day-to-day impact clearly.
  • Support understanding how Rehabilitative Employment and the €165 disregard interact with a DA claim.
  • A clear view of what a DA award unlocks beyond the weekly payment — Free Travel, Fuel Allowance, and Medical Card considerations.

To be clear about what we are: we're an independent, technology-led application support service, not the Department of Social Protection. Applying for DA directly through MyWelfare.ie or your Intreo Centre is always free. Where we aim to add value once the paid service launches is in the preparation and evidence-gathering that so often makes the difference between an award and a refusal.
