DLA Mobility Component Explained

Video coming soon

DLA is made up of two separate components — care and mobility — each assessed on its own merits and paid at different rates depending on the level of need. A child can receive one, both, or neither, and the amount is not linked to a diagnosis but to how much extra care or supervision they genuinely need day to day. Below is a full breakdown of the current weekly and annual rates for each component.

Care Component

Lowest rate£28.70/wk

For a child who needs help for a significant portion of the day, or with preparing a cooked main meal (if aged 16), but not day and night care.

Middle rate£72.65/wk

For a child who needs frequent attention or supervision either throughout the day, or throughout the night — but not both.

Highest rate£108.55/wk

For a child who needs frequent attention or supervision both throughout the day and throughout the night, or who is terminally ill.

Mobility Component

Lower rate£28.70/wk

For a child (usually 5 or over) who can walk but needs guidance or supervision outdoors, well beyond what is normal for their age.

Higher rate£75.75/wk

For a child (usually 3 or over) who is unable, or virtually unable, to walk, or for whom walking could be dangerous to their health.

A child receiving both the highest care rate and higher mobility rate could receive up to £184.30 per week (£9,583.60 per year) in DLA alone, on top of Child Benefit.

DLA Rates: FAQs

Can my child get both the care and mobility components?

Yes — many children receive both, paid together, if their needs meet the criteria for each. They are assessed separately, so your child could qualify for one, both, or neither.

Is DLA paid weekly?

DLA is worked out as a weekly rate but usually paid every 4 weeks directly into a bank account.

Will DLA reduce our Universal Credit or other benefits?

No. DLA is not counted as income for means-tested benefits like Universal Credit, Housing Benefit or Council Tax Reduction. In fact, receiving DLA can sometimes increase entitlement to other benefits and premiums.

Does the rate ever change automatically?

Rates are reviewed and usually increase each April in line with inflation. Your award letter will confirm your specific rate and when it is next due for review.
