You May Be a Carer Without Thinking of Yourself as One

You may be a carer without thinking of yourself as one. Check whether support is available.

Ask most unpaid carers if they're a "carer" and a surprising number will say no — even while spending hours every week helping a parent get washed and dressed, managing someone's medication, doing the shopping and cooking because they can't manage it themselves, or simply being on hand because leaving them alone isn't safe. It's rarely framed that way in the moment. It's just what you do for your mum, your partner, your brother.

The DWP's definition is broader than most people expect

You may be entitled to Carer's Allowance if you spend 35 hours or more a week caring for someone who already receives a qualifying disability benefit — Attendance Allowance, PIP daily living component, or DLA at the middle or highest care rate. There's no requirement to live with them, to be related to them, or to have given up work entirely. Helping with daily living tasks, keeping them safe, managing appointments and medication, and simply being there to supervise all count towards those hours.

It adds up faster than people think

35 hours a week sounds like a lot until you actually total it up: morning routines, meal preparation, medication reminders, appointments, phone calls to arrange things on their behalf, evening checks, and simply being available in case something goes wrong. Many carers are well past 35 hours without ever having consciously counted.

Worth checking even if you're not sure

Carer's Allowance is worth £86.45 a week (2026/27) — £4,495.40 a year — for something a huge number of people are already doing unpaid and unrecognised. If you're helping someone regularly with everyday things because of their health condition or disability, it's worth two minutes to check whether you count, rather than assuming you don't.

You may already be doing carer-level hours without realising. Check now.
