Attendance Allowance Isn't Just About Mobility — It's About Everyday Help
Attendance Allowance covers the everyday help you need — not just mobility.
"I can still get around the house fine, so I probably won't qualify" is something we hear all the time — and it's one of the reasons genuinely eligible people never apply. Attendance Allowance is often mistaken for a mobility benefit, like the mobility component of PIP or DLA. It isn't. Mobility is only ever part of the picture, and for a great many successful claims, it isn't part of it at all.
It's about care and supervision, not walking
Attendance Allowance is assessed on the level of personal care or supervision you need because of a health condition or disability — over and above what most people your age would need. That can include help with everyday things most of us take for granted: preparing a meal safely, remembering to take medication, getting dressed, washing, or simply needing someone to check on you because of a condition like memory loss, poor eyesight, breathlessness, or unsteady balance.
None of that requires difficulty walking. Someone who can walk perfectly well but can no longer safely use the cooker, forgets medication, or needs supervision because of a fall risk or a condition like dementia can still have a strong claim.
Day and night needs both count
The assessment looks at care needs during the day and at night separately, and either on its own can support an award. Needing help to get up safely in the night, needing someone to check you're safe, or being unable to prepare a hot drink or meal without help are all exactly the kind of everyday difficulties Attendance Allowance is designed to recognise.
Why this misunderstanding costs people money
Because the name and the DWP's own "mobility component" language elsewhere in the benefits system creates confusion, a lot of people rule themselves out before they've even looked at what's actually being assessed. If you need extra help or supervision with daily living — for any reason, mobility or otherwise — it's worth checking, because that's precisely what decides the claim.
If you need help with everyday things, it's worth 2 minutes to check.
