Why We're Now Supporting Carer's Allowance Claims
Most of the benefits we help with — Attendance Allowance, Pension Credit — are about your own health or your own income. Carer's Allowance is different. It's a claim built entirely around someone else: the person you look after, and whether they already receive a qualifying disability benefit. That single dependency is, in our experience, the main reason unpaid carers overlook it for years.
Why it gets missed
- People caring for a family member rarely think of themselves as 'a carer' in the formal sense — it's just what they do, so they never think to check what support exists for them specifically.
- The eligibility rules genuinely are stricter than most benefits: 35 hours a week is a hard minimum with no partial rate, and it depends on the other person's benefit status, not just your own situation.
- The earnings limit is a cliff-edge, not a taper. Earn £1 over £204 a week after allowable deductions and you lose the entire week's payment — which understandably puts a lot of people off even applying, in case they get the sums wrong.
- Very few people realise a successful claim can affect a Severe Disability Premium the person they care for already relies on, so even carers who do investigate sometimes back away rather than risk making things worse.
What it's worth
Carer's Allowance pays a flat £86.45 a week for 2026/27 — £4,495.40 a year — regardless of how many hours over 35 you provide. It's a single rate, not scaled to need, which makes it one of the simpler amounts to explain, even though the eligibility test around it is one of the more complicated ones we deal with.
Why we're adding it now
We see the connection to Attendance Allowance play out constantly: once someone's relative is awarded AA, the family member doing the day-to-day caring is very often eligible for Carer's Allowance too, and almost never realises it. Adding Carer's Allowance to our service closes that gap — it lets us look at both sides of the same household in one conversation, rather than sending someone away to work out a second, unrelated claim on their own.
It's free to apply directly with the DWP, and that's always the first thing we'll tell you. Where our paid support tends to help is in the detail that trips people up: confirming the qualifying benefit is actually in payment, checking your real weekly earnings figure against the limit before you apply, and flagging the Severe Disability Premium interaction so nobody loses money on one side while gaining it on the other.
