Opening a rent letter and doing the sums is a familiar, quietly stressful moment for a lot of people — and for many, it happens every single month without ever wondering whether there's help available. Housing Benefit has been widely reported as being "replaced by Universal Credit," which leads a lot of people to assume it no longer exists or no longer applies to them. That's not quite right.

It hasn't disappeared — it's just changed who it's for

If you're of working age, you'll usually need to claim the housing element of Universal Credit rather than new Housing Benefit — that part of the change is real. But if you're over State Pension age, Housing Benefit is still very much alive, and it's the route you'd normally use rather than Universal Credit.

Supported and temporary accommodation is a separate route

Regardless of age, people in supported housing, temporary accommodation, or certain care settings can often still claim Housing Benefit directly. If that applies to you, it's worth checking even if you've been told elsewhere that Housing Benefit "doesn't exist anymore."

Housing Benefit is one of the most commonly missed parts of what we call the benefit cascade. Someone gets Attendance Allowance, later finds out it raised their Pension Credit, maybe even checks Council Tax Reduction too — and stops there, never realising that if they rent their home, that same chain of entitlement can extend to help with housing costs as well.

Rent is one of the largest regular costs most households face, so even partial help can make a genuine difference to what's left over each month. Whether you qualify depends heavily on your age, your housing situation, and what other support you already receive — which is exactly why a quick, specific check is worth more than a general assumption either way.
