Housing Benefit for Pensioners — Free Eligibility Guide Available

Housing Benefit helps cover rent for people in certain circumstances — most commonly people over State Pension age, along with those in supported or temporary accommodation regardless of age. It's the benefit we see missed most often once someone has already been through an Attendance Allowance or Pension Credit application, simply because nobody mentions there's a fourth application worth making. We're building a dedicated Housing Benefit service to close that gap, and our free eligibility guide is available right now.

Why people assume it doesn't apply to them

  • Housing Benefit was largely replaced by Universal Credit for working-age renters, so many people over State Pension age assume — wrongly — that it no longer exists or doesn't apply to them.
  • It's a separate claim from Council Tax Reduction, even though both are usually handled by the same council department, which leads people to assume one application covers both.
  • It isn't triggered automatically by a Pension Credit award, in the same way Council Tax Reduction often isn't — it has to be applied for in its own right.
  • Private renters sometimes assume, again wrongly, that renting privately rather than from a council or housing association makes them ineligible.

The Pension Credit connection

If you're over State Pension age, renting, and receiving the Guarantee Credit part of Pension Credit, Housing Benefit can cover your full rent up to the Local Housing Allowance rate for your area — in practice, that can mean several hundred pounds a month for many households. Even without Pension Credit, an assessment based on your income and savings alone can still cover a meaningful share of your rent. This is exactly why checking the whole cascade — Attendance Allowance, Pension Credit, Council Tax Reduction and Housing Benefit — together matters more than checking one benefit in isolation.

What we're building

  • A free guide, live now, explaining who can still get Housing Benefit, how it differs from the Universal Credit housing element, and how it connects to Pension Credit.
  • An eligibility checker that gives you an honest first read based on your rent, income and household circumstances.
  • A cascade check alongside Pension Credit and Council Tax Reduction, so a household applying for one benefit doesn't leave the others on the table.
  • Support completing the application with your council, once the full service launches.

To be clear about what we are: we're an independent, technology-led guidance service. Applying for Housing Benefit directly with your council is always free, and our guide is genuinely free to use. Where we aim to add value, once the full service launches, is in managing the whole spread of related applications rather than starting again from scratch with a fourth form.
