Attendance Allowance Rates Explained: How Much Could You Get?

Attendance Allowance is one of the most under-claimed benefits in the UK. It’s tax-free, it’s not means-tested, and it doesn’t reduce any other benefit you already receive — yet millions of people over State Pension age who qualify simply never apply, often because they don’t realise the rules cover them, or because the 30-page form puts them off.

The two rates

There are two rates of Attendance Allowance, and which one you get depends entirely on how much help or supervision you need — not on your income, savings, or how severe your diagnosis sounds on paper.

• Lower rate — currently £3,988.40 a year — if you need help or supervision during the day, or during the night only.
• Higher rate — currently £5,959 a year — if you need help or supervision both during the day and at night, or you’re terminally ill.

That distinction — day-and-night versus day-or-night — is exactly where most self-submitted applications go wrong. Someone might genuinely need help getting dressed, washing, managing medication and staying safe overnight, but if the form doesn’t clearly describe both, the DWP has no way of awarding the higher rate.

Why the wording on the form matters so much

The DWP decision maker never meets you. They only see what’s written on the form. A claim that says "I struggle a bit with stairs" reads very differently to a decision maker than one that says "I need someone with me every time I use the stairs because I have fallen twice in the last six months and I am afraid of falling again." Same person, same condition — completely different outcome, because one description proves a genuine, ongoing care need and the other doesn’t.

What conditions qualify?

There’s no fixed list of "qualifying conditions." Attendance Allowance is based on the impact a condition has on your daily life, not the diagnosis itself.
