Attendance Allowance and Back Pain: Proving an Invisible Condition

DWP data shows more than 82,000 state pension age claimants receive Attendance Allowance with back pain recorded as their main condition. Chronic back pain rarely shows up clearly on a scan in a way that proves how disabling it is day to day — which is exactly why so many claims describe it too vaguely to succeed at the right rate.

What a decision maker actually needs to see

Pain itself isn’t measurable from the outside. What is assessable is the practical effect: how far you can walk, how long you can stand or sit, whether you need help getting in and out of bed, and whether this is a genuine, ongoing pattern rather than an occasional bad day.

What’s worth describing clearly

  • Difficulty or pain getting in and out of bed, or turning over during the night
  • How far you can walk before pain forces you to stop, and how long recovery takes
  • Needing to change position frequently when sitting, or being unable to sit for long at all
  • The effect of pain medication — drowsiness, dizziness, or the need to time doses around activities
  • How often “bad days” happen, and what specifically is different about them

Why vague descriptions cost people the higher rate

“My back hurts if I bend” and “I cannot bend to put my socks on and need my husband to help me every morning, and most nights I wake up two or three times because I can’t find a comfortable position” describe a very different level of need to a decision maker, even if they’re the same person on different days. Capturing the second kind of detail, consistently, is what a well-prepared claim gets right.
