Attendance Allowance and Arthritis: What the DWP’s Own Figures Show

According to the latest DWP figures, more than 532,000 people over State Pension age are claiming Attendance Allowance with arthritis recorded as their main condition — by far the largest single category, well ahead of dementia (around 213,700) and heart disease (around 135,600). If you’re living with arthritis and have never checked whether you qualify, you’re in the largest group of people who successfully do.

Why arthritis tops the list

Arthritis is extremely common in older age, but that alone doesn’t explain the number — what matters is that arthritis very often causes exactly the kind of practical, day-to-day difficulty Attendance Allowance is designed to recognise: pain and stiffness that make dressing, washing, moving around and even sleeping through the night genuinely harder, for six months or more.

What actually gets assessed

There’s no points system and no list of qualifying joints or diagnoses. The DWP decision maker is trying to answer one question: how much help or supervision do you need because of your condition, and is that need present by day, by night, or both? That’s the entire basis for the lower rate (£76.70/wk) versus the higher rate (£114.60/wk).

• Difficulty dressing, washing or getting in and out of the bath because of joint pain or stiffness
• Needing longer to do everyday tasks, or needing to stop and rest partway through
• Pain or stiffness that is worse at night, affecting sleep or the ability to move safely in the dark
• Needing help with medication management, including opening childproof packaging
• Days that vary significantly — the difference between a good day and a bad day

Why so many arthritis claims still get the wrong outcome

Being the most common condition on successful claims doesn’t mean every arthritis claim succeeds, or gets the rate it should. DWP figures show 59% of new disability benefit claims are disallowed nationally when people apply without help — often because the form is answered around a good day, not an honest account of the worst ones.
