Attendance Allowance and Mobility Problems: Do You Qualify?
Last updated: April 2026 · Reviewed by: Silverwings Benefits Team · Source: DWP
Mobility problems can creep up gradually — a slightly shorter walking distance here, an extra pause on the stairs there — until one day you realise how much has actually changed. Attendance Allowance exists for exactly this kind of gradual, cumulative difficulty, not just for people with a single dramatic diagnosis.
Important: there’s no list of qualifying conditions
Attendance Allowance isn’t awarded because of a diagnosis — it’s awarded based on the help and supervision you need day-to-day because of your health. Two people with mobility problems can have very different levels of need, and both routes below start with a free, no-obligation check.

How Mobility Problems Can Affect Daily Life
These are the kinds of everyday difficulties that can be relevant to an Attendance Allowance claim. Not everyone with mobility problems experiences all of these, and some people experience difficulties not listed here — this is general context, not a checklist to copy onto a form.
Walking distance and speed
Needing to stop and rest after a short distance, or finding that a walk that used to take minutes now takes considerably longer.
Managing stairs
Needing to go up or down slowly, one step at a time, holding onto a rail, or avoiding stairs altogether where possible.
Getting up from chairs or the bed
Needing to push up with both arms, rock to build momentum, or occasionally needing a hand from someone else to stand safely.
Outdoor versus indoor mobility
Some people manage reasonably around a familiar home but struggle far more outside, on uneven pavements, in crowds, or without something to hold onto.
Use of mobility aids
Relying on a stick, frame, wheelchair or furniture to move around safely, and needing help if that aid isn't within reach.
Fear of falling
Even without a specific accident, many people restrict what they do because they're afraid of falling, which is itself a meaningful daily impact.

Why Not Apply Alone?
Mobility-related claims are often under-assessed because difficulties build up gradually and are easy to describe based on a best day rather than an ordinary one. Getting this right matters — which is exactly the kind of detail our team focuses on.
DWP figures show 59% of new disability benefit claims are disallowed nationally. We’ve helped hundreds of people apply successfully since October 2023, on a success-based fee basis — you only pay if your application succeeds.
