What Benefits Unlock with Pension Credit?
Last updated: April 2026 · Reviewed by: Silverwings Benefits Team · Source: GOV.UK
Pension Credit has a reputation among advisers as the single most valuable benefit to check for anyone over State Pension age on a low income — not just for the payment itself, but because of what it opens the door to. It's often described as a passported or gateway benefit, because being awarded it can act as a key that unlocks a whole list of further support.
This guide sets out exactly what Pension Credit can unlock, so you know what else to check if you're already receiving it — or what's potentially waiting for you if you haven't checked your eligibility yet.

Why Pension Credit is called the 'gateway' benefit
Pension Credit itself is a means-tested top-up for people over State Pension age on a low income — but many other schemes, run by different organisations, use Pension Credit as a simple proof of low income rather than reassessing your finances from scratch. That's what 'passported' means: instead of applying separately with your full financial details, you show that you already receive Pension Credit and that alone can qualify you.
Council Tax Reduction — often up to 100%
If you receive the Guarantee Credit part of Pension Credit, most local council schemes will award you a full, or near-full, reduction on your council tax bill. This is still a separate application made with your own council — see our full Council Tax Reduction guide at /council-tax-reduction, and our dedicated guide on whether Pension Credit reduces council tax at /does-pension-credit-reduce-council-tax for the detail on how much.
Housing Benefit — help with rent
For renters over State Pension age, Pension Credit can unlock or increase Housing Benefit, covering some or all of your rent. See our full Housing Benefit guide at /housing-benefit for who can still claim it and how it works alongside Pension Credit.
Free TV licence for the over-75s
Anyone aged 75 or over who receives Pension Credit is entitled to a free TV licence, rather than paying the standard annual fee. This is one of the clearest, simplest passported perks — the TV Licensing scheme accepts Pension Credit receipt as the qualifying condition.
Warm Home Discount
Many people who receive the Guarantee Credit part of Pension Credit qualify automatically for the Warm Home Discount, a one-off reduction applied to an electricity bill each winter. Eligibility rules can vary slightly by year and energy supplier, so it's worth checking directly with your supplier or on GOV.UK once your Pension Credit is confirmed.
Cold Weather Payments
People receiving Pension Credit are eligible for Cold Weather Payments — a payment triggered automatically when the temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees Celsius or below for seven consecutive days. Unlike most of the cascade, this one genuinely pays out automatically once you're in payment for Pension Credit — no extra application needed.
Help with NHS costs
Pension Credit (specifically the Guarantee Credit element) can also entitle you to help with NHS costs — including free NHS dental treatment, free eye tests, help towards glasses, and reimbursement of travel costs to hospital appointments. Again, this uses Pension Credit as the qualifying proof rather than a separate financial assessment.

Possible Council Tax Reduction
With Guarantee Credit, in most council schemes
Advisers often say Pension Credit is the single most under-claimed benefit in the country — not because the payment itself is small, but because of everything that comes with it.
None of this happens by itself
Every item on this list still needs its own check or application — a Pension Credit award doesn't automatically apply your council tax reduction, register you for a free TV licence, or notify your energy supplier. See our guide on the full cascade after Attendance Allowance at /what-can-i-claim-after-attendance-allowance for how Pension Credit itself often gets triggered in the first place.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I automatically get all of these once I'm awarded Pension Credit?
No. Pension Credit acts as a qualifying proof for each of these, but you (or someone helping you) still need to apply, register, or inform the relevant organisation — your council, TV Licensing, your energy supplier, or the NHS — separately in each case, except Cold Weather Payments, which are paid automatically.
Which part of Pension Credit unlocks the most — Guarantee Credit or Savings Credit?
Guarantee Credit generally unlocks the most, including full Council Tax Reduction in most council schemes and the Warm Home Discount. Savings Credit alone can still help with some things, like a partial Council Tax Reduction, but the effect is usually smaller.
Does Pension Credit help with dental or eye care costs?
Yes. People receiving the Guarantee Credit part of Pension Credit are generally entitled to help with NHS costs, including free dental treatment, free eye tests, and help towards the cost of glasses.
Is the free TV licence for everyone on Pension Credit, or only over-75s?
It's specifically for people aged 75 or over who receive Pension Credit. Being under 75 and on Pension Credit doesn't qualify you for the free licence on its own.
I already get Pension Credit — where should I start checking these?
Council Tax Reduction and Housing Benefit are usually the highest-value items to check first, since they can be worth hundreds or thousands of pounds a year.
