How PTSD can affect your PIP claim

Video coming soon

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can cause flashbacks, hypervigilance, avoidance of certain places or situations, and severe anxiety that affects everyday functioning.

Psychiatric conditions are among the categories most likely to see an enhanced-rate award, with around 42% of psychiatric claims receiving the enhanced daily living rate and around 39% the enhanced mobility rate.

What matters is how PTSD affects your ability to function day to day, not the trauma itself.

PTSD and daily living

  • engaging with other people, especially strangers or in crowded settings
  • coping with unexpected changes or triggers during daily tasks
  • managing money or paperwork when concentration is affected by hypervigilance
  • sleeping, with knock-on effects on energy for daily tasks
  • washing, dressing or eating when flashbacks or dissociation occur
  • remembering or taking medication reliably

PTSD and mobility

The mobility component considers your ability to plan and follow journeys, which can be significantly affected by PTSD through:

  • avoidance of certain places, routes or types of transport linked to trauma
  • hypervigilance making busy or unfamiliar environments overwhelming
  • panic attacks or flashbacks triggered while travelling
  • needing someone with you to travel safely and confidently

Why the trigger and avoidance pattern matters

A PTSD claim is strongest when it explains specific triggers, what happens when they occur, and what you avoid as a result — not just that you have been diagnosed with PTSD.

Evidence for a PTSD PIP claim

  • GP and mental health service records
  • trauma-focused therapy records, such as EMDR or CBT
  • psychiatrist reports
  • medication history
  • statements from people who see how you respond to triggers

Frequently asked questions

Does PTSD need to be linked to military service to claim PIP?

No. PIP is available to anyone whose PTSD, from any cause, substantially affects daily living or mobility.

Will avoiding certain places count against me?

No — avoidance because of PTSD symptoms is itself evidence of the condition’s impact and should be explained, not hidden.
