How fibromyalgia can affect your PIP claim
Video coming soon
Fibromyalgia causes widespread pain, extreme fatigue, poor sleep and "fibro fog" that can make ordinary daily activities exhausting or unpredictable.
Because there is no visible sign or single test for fibromyalgia, some people worry it will not be taken seriously by DWP. In practice, PIP assessments look at the functional effect of your symptoms, not the diagnosis label.
What matters is what your pain, fatigue and fog stop you doing reliably, safely and repeatedly.
Fibromyalgia and daily living
People with fibromyalgia commonly report difficulty with:
- preparing and cooking food, especially standing for long enough
- washing, bathing and drying yourself
- dressing, including fastenings and bending down
- managing medication and remembering doses through brain fog
- concentrating enough to manage money or paperwork
- engaging with other people on high-pain or exhausted days
Fibromyalgia and mobility
Musculoskeletal conditions account for around 31% of PIP claims, and fibromyalgia is frequently assessed alongside pain conditions of this type.
The mobility assessment considers whether you can walk a distance:
- safely, without a significant risk of falling or worsening symptoms
- to an acceptable standard, not just by pushing through severe pain
- repeatedly, on a "typical" day rather than your best day
- within a reasonable time, even with rest breaks
Fatigue is often overlooked here: someone may walk a short distance fine once, then be unable to repeat it or need days to recover.
Why the "good day, bad day" pattern matters
Fibromyalgia symptoms fluctuate. A claim that only describes your best day is likely to understate the real impact.
DWP guidance asks decision makers to consider your condition over time, including how often bad days occur and what happens on them.
Evidence for a fibromyalgia PIP claim
- GP records showing your diagnosis and ongoing symptoms
- rheumatology or pain clinic letters
- medication history, including painkillers and sleep aids
- a pain or symptom diary covering good and bad days
- statements from family or carers about what they see day to day
Frequently asked questions
Can I get PIP for fibromyalgia without a specialist diagnosis?
A GP diagnosis and records of ongoing symptoms can be enough. A rheumatology letter can help, but is not always essential.
Will DWP dismiss fibromyalgia because there is no scan or blood test?
No single test proves fibromyalgia, but assessors are required to consider the functional impact you describe, supported by whatever evidence you have.
Does fatigue count towards PIP, not just pain?
Yes. Fatigue affecting your ability to repeat activities safely and reliably is directly relevant to several PIP daily living and mobility descriptors.
