How COPD can affect your PIP claim
Video coming soon
People living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease may be eligible for PIP where breathlessness, fatigue or other symptoms affect their daily living or mobility.
Having COPD does not automatically mean you will receive PIP.
DWP assesses the level of difficulty your condition causes in everyday life.
COPD and mobility
COPD can significantly reduce the distance someone can comfortably walk.
You may experience:
- severe breathlessness
- fatigue
- frequent stops
- reduced walking speed
- difficulty climbing steps
- difficulty walking outdoors
- the need for mobility aids
- difficulty carrying items while walking
PIP considers more than simply whether you can physically walk.
It also considers whether an activity can be performed safely, repeatedly, to an acceptable standard and within a reasonable time.
COPD and daily living
Respiratory conditions can affect everyday activities including:
- bathing
- dressing
- preparing meals
- standing for extended periods
- moving around the home
- managing medication
- using inhalers or oxygen equipment
- completing tasks without becoming exhausted
Even seemingly simple activities may become difficult where breathlessness is severe.
What evidence can support a claim?
Evidence might include:
- GP records
- respiratory clinic records
- pulmonary function tests
- hospital records
- medication lists
- inhaler prescriptions
- oxygen therapy information
- respiratory specialist reports
Your application should also give practical examples of what happens when you attempt everyday activities.
