How chronic back pain can affect your PIP claim

Video coming soon

Chronic back pain can affect almost every part of everyday life.

If your back condition affects your ability to walk, stand, dress, wash, prepare food or carry out other daily activities, you may be eligible for Personal Independence Payment.

A diagnosis such as chronic back pain, degenerative disc disease or a spinal condition does not automatically result in PIP.

The assessment focuses on the actual limitations caused by your condition.

Back pain and mobility

For many people with spinal or back conditions, mobility is the most obvious difficulty.

DWP may consider issues such as:

  • the distance you can walk
  • how much pain walking causes
  • whether you require a walking aid
  • whether you need to stop and rest
  • how slowly you move
  • whether walking leaves you unable to repeat the activity
  • whether there is a risk of falling

The ability to complete an activity only with severe pain or only once may not necessarily mean you can perform it reliably for PIP purposes.

Daily living and back conditions

Back pain can also affect:

  • getting dressed
  • putting on socks and shoes
  • getting into a bath or shower
  • using the toilet
  • standing to cook
  • bending or reaching
  • getting in and out of bed
  • managing medication
  • completing household routines

Applicants sometimes concentrate entirely on walking and overlook these daily living difficulties.

Useful evidence

Evidence might include:

  • GP records
  • pain clinic records
  • physiotherapy notes
  • MRI or scan results
  • medication history
  • orthopaedic or spinal specialist reports
  • information about aids or adaptations you use

But the most important part of the claim is explaining how your condition affects you day to day.

Check your PIP eligibility

If chronic back pain or a spinal condition affects your ability to manage ordinary activities or move around, our PIP eligibility process can help identify whether your circumstances may fit the PIP rules.
