How Much Could You Get from Pension Credit? — we’re filming this explainer now.

Pension Credit has two parts — Guarantee Credit, which tops your weekly income up to a set minimum, and Savings Credit, a smaller extra payment for people who reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016 and have modest savings or additional pension income. On top of both, extra amounts can apply for severe disability, caring responsibilities or certain housing costs.

The exact amount always depends on your full circumstances, but the worked examples below give a realistic sense of what different households actually receive.

Guarantee Credit: the core top-up

Guarantee Credit brings your weekly income up to £218.15 if you are single, or £332.95 if you are a couple (2024/25 rates). If your income is below that figure, Guarantee Credit simply makes up the difference.

  • Single person with £180/week income → tops up by £38.15/week (£1,983.80/year)
  • Single person with £205/week income → tops up by £13.15/week (£683.80/year)
  • Couple with combined £290/week income → tops up by £42.95/week (£2,233.40/year)

Savings Credit: an extra payment for some

Savings Credit is worth up to £17.01 a week (single) or £19.04 a week (couple), and is only available if you (or your partner) reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016. It rewards having some savings or additional income above the basic State Pension, rather than simply topping up to a minimum.

Additions that increase your award

  • Severe disability addition — for each person in the household getting Attendance Allowance, PIP daily living, or DLA care (middle/highest rate)
  • Carer addition — if you care for someone for at least 35 hours a week
  • Housing costs — help with certain service charges and interest on some loans, on top of the standard amounts

A worked example with additions

Take a single person with £190/week income who also receives Attendance Allowance. The basic Guarantee Credit top-up would be £28.15/week, but the severe disability addition on top of that can add a further meaningful amount — commonly taking the total well past what the headline figures alone would suggest.

What Pension Credit unlocks beyond the weekly payment

Even a small Pension Credit award, sometimes just a few pounds a week, can be a "passport" to other help: full or partial Council Tax Reduction, a Warm Home Discount, help with rent through Housing Benefit, a free TV licence at 75+, and access to NHS dental and optical costs.

The headline weekly figure is often the smallest part of what a Pension Credit award is actually worth.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Pension Credit worth on average?

It varies widely by household, but many recipients receive several thousand pounds a year once the weekly top-up and passported benefits like Council Tax Reduction are added together.

Can I get Savings Credit if I reached State Pension age after April 2016?

Generally no, unless your partner reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016 — Savings Credit is being phased out for people who reached State Pension age after that date.

Do the disability and carer additions apply automatically?

They are applied once the DWP has the relevant information about your (or your partner’s) disability benefits or caring role, so it is worth making sure this is included on your claim.

Is Pension Credit taxable?

No, Pension Credit is not taxable.
