Think Your Income Is Too High for Pension Credit? Check Before You Assume

Think your income is too high for Pension Credit? Check before you assume.

It's one of the most common things we hear: "I've got a small pension, so I won't qualify for Pension Credit." It's an understandable assumption — but it's also the single biggest reason genuinely eligible pensioners never apply, and it costs households in England, Scotland and Wales hundreds of millions of pounds in unclaimed support every year.

The threshold is higher than most people think

Pension Credit tops your weekly income up to £218.15 if you're single, or £332.95 if you're a couple. That's the guaranteed minimum, not a cut-off below which you're excluded and above which you get nothing — even people with income above the headline figure can sometimes still qualify once the calculation accounts for things like housing costs, disability, or caring responsibilities.

On top of that, extra amounts are added to your personal threshold if you get certain other benefits, care for someone, or are disabled — which means the actual figure that applies to you personally can be considerably higher than the headline rate people assume applies to everyone.

A small State Pension doesn't mean a small award

People sometimes assume that because their State Pension is "not that low," they must be over the threshold. But Pension Credit looks at your total weekly income against your personal applicable amount — not against some fixed idea of what counts as "low income." Even a modest-looking Pension Credit award, sometimes just a few pounds a week, is worth checking because of what it can unlock (see below).

Why checking costs nothing but assuming can cost thousands

Even a small Pension Credit award of just £1 a week can act as a passport to Council Tax Reduction, Housing Benefit, the Warm Home Discount, and a free TV licence if you're 75 or over — support that can be worth hundreds or thousands of pounds a year on top of the Pension Credit itself. Assuming you don't qualify, without checking, is the only way to guarantee you miss out on all of it.

Don't assume — it takes 2 minutes to actually check.
