One Entitlement Can Lead to Another: Pension Credit and Council Tax Reduction

One entitlement can lead to another — check every option.

Benefits and reductions rarely exist in isolation, but most people check them one at a time, in whatever order they happen to come across them. Pension Credit and Council Tax Reduction are a classic example: two entirely separate applications, run by two entirely separate organisations (the DWP and your local council), that are nonetheless closely linked in a way that catches a lot of people out.

Getting Pension Credit is often the key

If you're awarded Pension Credit, particularly the Guarantee Credit element, you'll very often also qualify for Council Tax Reduction, sometimes enough to clear your Council Tax bill completely. But because these are two different application processes, being approved for one doesn't automatically trigger the other — you still have to apply to your council separately.

It works the other way round too

If you've already applied for Council Tax Reduction and been assessed as having a low income, it's worth checking Pension Credit as well if you're over State Pension age — the same low-income circumstances that qualify you for one very often qualify you for the other.

Why checking them together matters

It's easy to apply for whichever one you've heard of first, get an answer, and stop there — assuming that's the full picture. In reality, each entitlement can be a signpost to the next: Pension Credit can lead to Council Tax Reduction, Housing Benefit, the Warm Home Discount and a free TV licence; Council Tax Reduction can be a sign it's worth checking Pension Credit if you haven't already. Checking every option together, rather than one at a time, is the only way to be sure you're not leaving money on the table.

Check every option, not just the one you already know about.
