Got Attendance Allowance or Pension Credit? Check Your Council Tax Bill Next

If you've recently been awarded Attendance Allowance or Pension Credit, there's a good chance nobody has told you about the next step: checking your Council Tax Reduction. It's a separate application, run by your local council rather than the DWP, and it's one of the most commonly missed pieces of the benefit cascade — the way one award can open the door to several more.

How the connection actually works

Attendance Allowance itself isn't means-tested, so it never reduces any other benefit you receive. But it does change the income calculation used for Pension Credit — which can mean an existing Pension Credit award goes up, or a new claim that previously looked borderline suddenly succeeds. And a Pension Credit award, in turn, is one of the strongest signals a council uses when assessing Council Tax Reduction.

  • If you get the Guarantee Credit part of Pension Credit, many councils will reduce your Council Tax Reduction to the maximum available for your household — in some cases, clearing the bill entirely.
  • If you get Savings Credit only, you can still qualify for a partial reduction, worked out against your income and savings.
  • Even without Pension Credit at all, Attendance Allowance itself is disregarded as income for Council Tax Reduction purposes in most council schemes, so it never counts against you.

Why so many people don't check

Council Tax Reduction is applied for separately, through your own local council, using its own scheme rules — not through the DWP, and not automatically triggered by a Pension Credit award landing in your account. It's an easy step to lose sight of after the stress of an Attendance Allowance or Pension Credit claim, particularly for older or vulnerable claimants managing several different letters, forms and government departments at once. Councils don't proactively write to every resident who might newly qualify — the onus is on the individual to apply.

The result is a genuinely large amount of legitimate entitlement that simply goes unclaimed every year, not because people are ineligible, but because nobody joined the dots for them.

What we do about it

It's completely free to apply for Council Tax Reduction yourself, directly with your council — there's no reason to pay anyone to do this on your own. But once someone is already a Silverwings client for Attendance Allowance or Pension Credit, we routinely flag Council Tax Reduction as the next thing worth checking, because we can already see the full household picture. Many of our clients prefer us to handle that step too, rather than starting a fresh application with a different organisation from scratch — and Housing Benefit is often the fourth link in the same chain for anyone renting their home.
