Attendance Allowance and Spondylosis: Do You Qualify?
Spondylosis — general wear and tear affecting the discs and joints of the spine, most often in the neck or lower back — is one of the conditions most commonly recorded on successful Attendance Allowance claims, according to DWP figures. It's a very gradual condition, which can make it easy to underestimate just how much daily help it genuinely requires by the time it's significant enough to affect you.
Important: there’s no list of qualifying conditions
Attendance Allowance isn’t awarded because of a diagnosis — it’s awarded based on the help and supervision you need day-to-day because of your health. Two people with spondylosis can have very different levels of need, and both routes below start with a free, no-obligation check.

How Spondylosis Can Affect Daily Life
These are the kinds of everyday difficulties that can be relevant to an Attendance Allowance claim. Not everyone with spondylosis experiences all of these, and some people experience difficulties not listed here — this is general context, not a checklist to copy onto a form.
Neck and shoulder movement
Cervical spondylosis can make turning the head, looking up or down, or reaching overhead painful or restricted — affecting dressing, driving and everyday tasks.
Lower back and mobility
Lumbar spondylosis often causes stiffness after sitting or lying, and pain that worsens with standing or walking any distance.
Grip and dexterity
Nerve compression from spondylosis can cause numbness, tingling or weakness in the hands, affecting buttons, jars, or holding cutlery.
Sleep and night-time pain
Spondylosis pain is often worse at night or first thing in the morning, meaning stiffness and difficulty moving can be a genuine overnight need too.
Balance and falls risk
Reduced neck or back mobility can affect balance, increasing the risk of falls and the need for someone nearby.
Fluctuating severity
Like most spinal conditions, spondylosis has better and worse periods — a claim needs to reflect the difficult periods honestly, not just how you feel on a good day.

Why Not Apply Alone?
Spondylosis claims are often marked down simply because it sounds like ordinary “wear and tear” rather than a disabling condition — when in practice it can severely limit movement, grip and sleep. Describing the real, cumulative daily impact clearly is exactly where we focus.
DWP figures show 59% of new disability benefit claims are disallowed nationally. We’ve helped hundreds of people apply successfully since October 2023, on a no win, no fee basis — you only pay if your application succeeds.
